Folly View
Primary School
(Personal, Social and Health Economic Education / Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education)
Vision: At Folly View Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos. British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
From the children:
"My best memories of a PSHE lesson are from when we were asked to create our class charter. We worked together to create a set of rules which we agreed would help us with our learning. We shared the charter we created and signed our names to say that we would do our best to follow these steps."
"Our PSHE lessons help us learn how to respect each other and make our school a safe space".
"PSHE teaches us about rights and responsibilities. About how to look after our world and have a happy future."
"I enjoy sharing my ideas with the class and listening to the other children's opinions. I like it when we record these ideas in our class floor book as we can be creative in how we show our thoughts."
From the PSHE leader: My name is Mrs Baigent, the PSHE co-ordinator at Folly View Primary School. I believe that PSHE teaches the children a vast array of skills such as how to show empathy to others, be resilient learners, understand that everyone has human rights and how these are protected, to develop their ability to stand up for what they believe is right and enhance their global awareness. It encourages children to learn about their local community as well as raising awareness of global issues and the wider world in which they live.
PSHE Policy
Our PSHE policy is a guide that explains how we teach PSHE at Folly View Primary School. It outlines our goals for children's learning, the methods we use in PSHE lessons and how we make PSHE engaging and accessible for everyone. The policy helps to ensure that every child has a consistent, high-quality PSHE education, with opportunities to explore and build their understanding of the world.
Intent
At Folly View Primary School, the PSHE and SMSC curriculum is designed to provide our pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within our community. Our pupils learn to understand and respect each other, our diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. They are encouraged to take part in a wide range of rich and meaningful first hand experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of our school and our local community.
In doing so, pupils at Folly View Primary School learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences through the use of early language skills and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. This mindful approach to PSHE & SMSC is delivered through the JIGSAW scheme of work and is embedded through our Learning Muscles; a set of desirable learning behaviours which equip children to become inspired, excited and motivated learners.
JIGSAW is the scheme of work we use in school to help your children grow their personal development, social skills, and understanding of healthy life choices, including mental health. Jigsaw allows us to ensure that children have time to reflect, manage their behaviour and emotions, learn about relationships and respect for themselves and others, as well as how to keep themselves safe.
Our aim is to help children to understand who they are, be healthy, happy and good, caring people.
Progression in PSHE
The PSHE curriculum overview provides an outline of the progression of skills children will cover throughout the year in each topic and year group. These are linked to the National Curriculum. It ensures children progressively build upon their PSHE knowledge and skills throughout their learning journey with PSHE and RSE.
Long Term Plan
The long term plan outlines the sequence of PSHE themes and units to be taught within each year group and aligns with the National Curriculum. It ensures children progressively build upon their scientific knowledge and skills throughout their learning journey within PSHE.
Impact - Learning in Action
Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education can improve the physical and psychosocial well-being of pupils. A virtuous cycle can be achieved, whereby pupils with better health and well-being can achieve better academically, which in turn leads to greater success. Taking a whole school approach to health and well-being is linked to pupils’ readiness to learn. PSHE education provides an opportunity to provide or enhance skills such as perseverance, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, self-management, self-respect, team work, locus of control, time and stress management.
How Online Safety Education is Delivered Alongside our Jigsaw PSHE Work
The Online Safety Long Term Plan is linked to our Jigsaw PSHE work to ensure consistency in teaching themes - for example Online Bullying is taught in Term 2 when the Jigsaw unit of work Celebrating Difference which explores Bullying is taught just as the online safety Health and Wellbeing unit is taught in Term 4 at the same time as the Jigsaw Healthy Me unit.
