Phonics
Children in Years 1 and 2 are taught phonics daily to support both their reading and writing. At the end of the year, your child will be expected to read the 40+ graphemes (letter/s that correspond to a sound), and use their phonic knowledge to decode unknown words when reading, including words with more than one syllable.
The video link below gives instruction for how each of these sounds should be correctly pronounced. The first document below shows the graphemes taught using the Read Write Inc. scheme, and the order in which they are taught, beginning with Set 1. Many graphemes also have a useful rhyme which the children learn to help them remember each sound. In the following documents, you will find printable flashcards to support your child in recognising and reading these sounds.
Use the website links below for interactive games practising decoding and blending phonic sounds.
Reading
Use the links below for access to online books for your child to practise reading. Many, including Bug Club for which your child has an account, include comprehension questions to check your child's understanding as they read.
