In Maths, Year 2 children continue to practise reading, writing and counting numbers from 0 - 100 including recognising numbers as pictorial representations. They learn to recognise the place value of each digit in a two-digit number, and use this knowledge to order and compare numbers using the symbols >, < and =. They learn to count in steps of 2, 3 and 5 from 0 and in steps of 10 from any number. The children will use their knowledge of number and number facts (including number bonds, doubles and halves) to help solve addition and subtraction calculations within 100. They will learn strategies such as partitioning (45 = 40 + 5) to support with mental calculations, as well as using resources such as number lines and pictorial representations. The children will also learn that addition is commutative (can be done in any order) but subtraction is not, and will begin to use the inverse to check calculations (if 6 + 4 = 10, then 10 - 4 = 6).
Year 2 children will learn to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, and learn strategies to solve multiplication and division problems within other times tables, including using concrete objects, arrays and drawing pictorial representations. Following on from division, children will begin to recognise the fractions 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 2/4 and 3/4 and will develop methods to find fractions of objects and shapes.
Children in Year 2 will continue to practise measuring length, height, capacity, volume, temperature and time, and will solve problems using these measurements in context. They will recognise coins and their values, and will combine coins to make different amounts, using the symbols £ and p. They will also continue to name, identify and describe the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, including naming 2D shapes on 3D surfaces, and begin to sort shapes according to their properties.
Below, find some suggestions for games to play at home supporting the understanding of number facts and calculation strategies, and printable documents including numberlines and 100 squares. There are also interactive games supporting all areas of maths in the links underneath, including a link to the multiplication songs by Percy Parker.
