Mental Health and Wellbeing

A School Where Everyone Belongs

At Folly View Primary School, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment where every child feels valued, respected, and able to succeed.

We recognise that children’s mental health and wellbeing are fundamental to their learning, and we work proactively to support all pupils, whatever their needs or circumstances.

Our Inclusive Ethos

We believe that every child:

  • Has the right to feel safe, happy, and included
  • Should be supported to reach their full potential
  • Brings unique strengths and experiences to our school community

We celebrate diversity and ensure that all pupils—regardless of background, ability, or need—are fully included in school life.

Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing

We take a whole-school approach to mental health, helping children to develop resilience, confidence, and emotional awareness.

✦ Universal Support (for all pupils)

  • A positive, inclusive school culture
  • Daily routines that promote security and consistency
  • PSHE lessons that teach emotional literacy and coping strategies
  • Opportunities for mindfulness, reflection, and relaxation
  • Strong relationships between pupils and trusted adults

✦ Targeted Support

  • Access to trained pastoral staff
  • Small group interventions focusing on wellbeing and social skills
  • Support during times of change or challenge (e.g. bereavement, family changes, deployment)

✦ Additional Support

  • Individual support plans where needed
  • Referrals to external services and specialist professionals
  • Close communication with families and outside agencies

Our Inclusion Provision

We are committed to meeting the needs of all learners, including those with additional needs. Due to the inclusive nature of our school and the way in which the curriculum is delivered, most of our pupils needs are able to be met within their own classrooms.

In addition to this we have 'The Orchard' a nurture base where children can receive support, have some time out or even use the space to re-regulate.

'The Rainbow room' a sensory room fully equipped to meet the sensory needs of our children.

'Sensory garden' a lovely outdoor space with scented plants, sensory equipment for children who need a little calm time outside.

'The Canopy' an inclusion base catering for a small group of children with complex needs that may struggle to access age related learning within their own classrooms.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

  • Early identification of needs
  • Personalised support and adapted teaching
  • Individual education plans and targeted interventions
  • Close collaboration with parents and external professionals

Equality and Diversity

  • Promoting respect, kindness, and understanding
  • Inclusive curriculum reflecting a diverse world
  • Zero tolerance for discrimination or bullying

Pastoral Care

Our pastoral system ensures that every child is known and supported.

  • Designated safeguarding and pastoral lead
  • Trained ELSA staff
  • Home school link worker
  • Nurture and emotional support provision
  • Safe spaces for children to talk and regulate
  • Strong relationships built on trust and respect
  • Zones of regulation used across the school

Working with Families

We believe that supporting children works best when we work in partnership with families.

We:

  • Maintain open communication
  • Offer guidance and support to parents and carers
  • Signpost families to external support services where appropriate

If you have any concerns about your child’s wellbeing, please speak to a member of staff—we are here to help.
