  • Young Carers

Young carers are pupils who are fulfilling a caring role at home and often have many additional responsibilities aside from school. A young carer may be:

    • Looking after a parent, sibling or other relative.
    • Providing physical, emotional or social support.
    • Looking after someone with a physical illness, disability, learning difficulty or a mental health condition.

At Folly View, we understand that these additional responsibilities mean that pupils who are young carers sometimes need some extra support to help them thrive and succeed at school. Because of this, Folly View has a lead member of staff for young carers who co-ordinates the following support for students:

    • 1 on 1 support including a safe space to talk about their responsibilities
    • Access to an in-school club where young carers can come together with other young carers and share experiences or just have some time out to be children and socialise without any responsibility.
    • Liaising with teachers and other staff in school where necessary about a students caring role to help them with things like homework and access to extracurricular activities.
    • Support and help with funding in order to access extracurricular opportunities or improve a student’s wellbeing.

We aim to understand and meet the needs of pupils who fulfil a caring role at home and encourage parents/carers to let us know if their child is a young carer.

If your child might be a young carer, please contact Mrs Spence, via the school office. Or you can make a referral to Be Free Young Carers below.

Be free Young Carers – OXfordshire

Be Free Young Carers – a proudly independent Oxfordshire charity leading the way in championing young carers.

We create real, lasting change for children and teenagers aged 8 – 17 who care for loved ones. Our support helps them rediscover their childhood, build confidence, and thrive.

Everything we do starts with people.

We build strong, personal relationships with our young carers, their families, schools, and local communities as well as with our team, volunteers, and partners. Many of us bring lived experience, and we work in a culture that welcomes everyone to show up as their full selves.
